We have been told by reliable sources that John Boitano, South End Rowing Club member and friend of Walt Stack came up with the idea of running the Dipsea twice in 1969. His daughter, Mary Etta recounts: “I remember clearly when it happened in 1969 … on a training run with the family and other DSE runners that day. He thought the race would be even more challenging and we would not have to arrange a ride back. My father said, ‘Why get a ride or take a bus when we have legs?'”

First held in 1970, the Double Dipsea, is a not just another tough trail run. It’s a sadistically designed race, intended to test your patience and perseverance. It rewards those most able to overcome adversity and show grace under fire. It leaves defeated those unable to adapt and quick to give in to frustration. Walt Stack, founder of Dolphin South End Runners Club (DSE) considered it his favorite race and it eventually took his name to honor and remember him.

For 44 years, the Double Dipsea was managed by volunteers from the DSE. With the growing popularity of the race and sport, increasing demands from the many permitting agencies and several key volunteers retiring, additional assistance was required. Brazen Racing began producing the event in 2013, working together with the DSE Running Club to continue the tradition.

The Dolphin South End Running Club, or DSE as it is more commonly known, was founded in 1966 by members of three clubs who were also interested in running – the Dolphin Swim Club, the South End Rowing Club, and the San Francisco Rowing Club. The DSE has grown into San Francisco’s largest running club with close to 500 members. It is also the oldest running club in San Francisco, and one of the oldest in the United States. The club is run entirely on a volunteer basis, with no paid staff or employees. DSE is proud to serve the Bay Area running community by holding low-key and low-cost races nearly every weekend of the year. Click here to learn more about the DSE Runners.

The founder of the DSE and a personality that will not be forgotten for a long time.
